Born into a working-class family, my upbringing was shaped by the tireless dedication of my mother. She spent over four decades toiling away in a factory, manufacturing rubber shoes. Day after day, she persevered in her laborious position until the factory's closure. Even after her demanding workday, she would gather groceries to prepare our family's supper. Late into the evening, she would wash the laundry before retiring to bed. At the break of dawn, she would rise once again, hanging the freshly laundered clothes, preparing breakfast and lunch for the family, and then embarking on another day's work at the factory. This was the relentless routine that defined her life.
My mother, with her unwavering work ethic, became my hero. Her contribution to our household was as crucial as my father's role as the primary breadwinner. Yet, amidst her selfless dedication, she had little time for herself.
Witnessing my mother's journey, I became acutely aware that countless women around the world dedicate their lives to the labor force to provide for their families. During my travels to China, India, and Nepal, I witnessed women engaging in various forms of manual labor, seemingly untouched by the advancements of technology. Especially in what is often referred to as the developing world, women continue to form an integral part of the workforce, particularly in physically demanding roles. As I commemorate the 20th anniversary of my mother's passing, I am compelled to pay tribute to all the working women of the world through a series of portraits.
Through my art, I aim to honour the tireless efforts and sacrifices made by women who dedicate themselves to their families and their work. Each portrait will encapsulate the strength, resilience, and spirit of these extraordinary individuals, highlighting their invaluable contributions. I seek to bring attention to the often unacknowledged roles they play and evoke a sense of admiration and appreciation in the viewers.
In this series, I hope to shed light on the universal experiences shared by women who face similar challenges and responsibilities across different cultures and societies. By capturing their essence and stories through my artwork, I strive to foster a deeper understanding of the indomitable spirit of working women worldwide.
My mother's legacy and the memories of her daily sacrifices continue to inspire me. It is through this tribute that I aspire to celebrate the untold stories of countless women who dedicate their lives to work, weaving together a tapestry of resilience, love, and unwavering determination.
